From scrubs to speadsheets: Why I started Holden & Thyme

Why I Started Holden & Thyme. There are moments in life that quietly change everything. For me, those moments came over several years, through a changing healthcare landscape, personal loss, unexpected transitions, and becoming the full-time caregiver for my dad. If you had asked me 10 years ago what my future looked like, I would have told you I'd always be in healthcare. For nearly two decades, I worked as a cardiac sonographer. I love caring for people. Those years taught me that details matter, trust is earned, and compassion can soften even hard days. Then life began asking something different of me... My personal life was changing, and a relationship that had shaped many years of my life began taking a different form. At the same time, I was raising my son and trying to navigate what the next chapter of life would look like for both of us. Not long after, my dad's health declined and I stepped away from my career to care for him full-time. Caregiving has often been a quiet and deeply personal responsibility, and it has taught me more about strength, loyalty, and presence than I could have imagined. Caregiving has also changed me to my core. It's taught me patience when I thought mine was gone, reminded me that the most meaningful work is often quiet and unseen, and shown me that our plans don't always unfold the way we imagined. Somewhere in the middle of all that, a quiet idea began to form. What if I built something of my own? Something that could provide stability for my son and I, allow me to be present while caring for my father, give me the flexibility to show up for the moments that matter to my son, and reflect the same care and integrity I have always brought to healthcare. That's how Holden & Thyme was born. The name is very personal. Holden is my son, one of the greatest blessings in my life. Thyme is a reminder that growth takes time and if you know me than you know. I'm new to this field, and I'm not afraid to say that. I’ve discovered that I genuinely enjoy bookkeeping because it feels a little like solving a puzzle taking the scattered pieces, making sense of them, and turning them into something clear and organized. I'm learning every day. Studying and asking questions, investing in becoming the best bookkeeper I can be. Starting over in my forties has been humbling to it’s most, but it's also been freeing. I've learned that beginning again is sometimes the scariest and bravest decision we make. Even though my profession is changing, my values haven't. I still believe in showing up, especially showing up for the people we love in the moments they need us the most, in doing the small things well, and in treating people with kindness and respect. Whether you're a small business owner looking for support or someone simply walking through a season of change, I'm glad you're here. This journal will be a place where I share what I'm learning about Bookkeeping, entrepreneurship, caregiving, and building a business with intention. Thank you for being here at the beginning. With a full heart, Tara
